DIY SEO: keyword research - competition researchWhen looking for competition for your national business or ministry, you will probably be served results in the search engines for local organizations.  This is because Google and Bing both detect your location (via your IP) and their algorithms include that location data when determining your results.  Keep in mind, however, that only people in your area are going to see these sites.  People in other locations are going to see sites local to their location.

When looking at your competition for keyword research (as we are now), it’s OK to use some local competitors for keyword ideas, but you want to be sure that at least half the sites you look at are national organizations.  Also, don’t be distracted by the local terms being used in these local organizations.  If your focus is national, you don’t need to be targeting local keywords.
