For businesses, keyword research can become overly burdensome and tedious. It’s tedious work anyway, but if your business has hundreds or thousands of products that you sell, then the task can seem impossible, especially if you consider all the different ways a customer may search for just one of those products.
Instead of researching hundreds or thousands of products and all their variations, pick ten or so of your most popular products and research them thoroughly. Once you complete your research you’ll not only have specific keywords that you can target for those most valuable products, but a sample of the ways people search for your niche of products. Look at the most popular keywords for each of the products and find the trends. You’ll usually find that there are a few phrases which are highly searched in each of the products or at lease phrases that are very similar.
For example, if you sell video games, you may find that versions of:
- “buy (insert video game name)”
- “(insert video game name) for sale”
- “discount (insert video game name)”
are pretty highly searched for a majority of the video game titles you researched. There may be slight variations, like “L.A. Noire for sale” and “L.A. Noire on sale”, but they are similar enough to give you an idea of what people are searching for.
What we can do is find the similar popular keywords in each of the researched products and assume that the same will be true of your other products. It won’t be totally accurate, but it will be good enough and well worth the time savings. It’s all about the law of diminishing returns.
