New Search Engine Partnerships and Break-ups Make News

Hi and welcome to OurChurch.Com’s monthly SEO Update for July 2015. I’m Paul Steinbrueck, keeping you up to date on what’s happening in the world of search and how it affects you.

It’s looking like a summer of love in the world of search, with some exciting, new romances heating up between some familiar search companies. Who’s been hanging out with who? Let’s get to it…

1) AOL Dumps Google for Bing

Since 2002, AOL has been displaying search results from Google, but that will change on January 1, 2016 when a new 10 year deal between AOL and Bing takes effect. Obviously things have changed a lot since 2002. AOL is not the big Internet player it once was and now only garners 1% of all searches. Never the less, it’s 1% more market share for Bing and 1% less for Google.

As a part of the deal, AOL will also take over sales of Microsoft’s display ads on properties like MSN, Outlook, Xbox and Skype. Those sites & services will still display Bing search results but AOL will be doing the sales of those ads.

2) Yahoo Testing Results Powered by Google

We reported previously that Yahoo had renegotiated its deal with Bing and is now only required to display Bing results 51% of the time. Well in that other 49% where Yahoo is free to show their own results or those of another company, they have begun experimenting with Google search results.

Will Yahoo end up with Google or Bing? Stay tuned for the next episode of As the Search Turns…

3) Google Portugal Blog Causes Link-Building Freak-Out

As you probably know Google has been putting the kibosh on questionable link building tactics used to improve search rankings. But the world of search marketing had a mini-meltdown earlier this month after a post on Google’s Portuguese webmaster blog said (after translation) “do not buy, sell, exchange or ask for links.”

It was the idea that Google was banning website owners from even asking for links that got people excited. But a few hours later, Google amended the post to say “do not buy, sell or ask for links that may violate our linking webmaster guidelines.” And search engine marketers breathed a sigh of relief.

4) Yelp-Backed Research Concludes Google is Anti-Competitive

Researchers from Columbia Law School and Harvard University Business School have published a new study that concludes Google is harming users and violating U.S. competition laws.

The researchers randomly delivered two sets of search results to 2500 Internet users – some received results with Google paid search listings and some without. Participants clicked on the results without the ads 50% more than those with ads. This led the researchers to claim by putting paid ads on the search results pages, Google was intentionally providing an inferior service. And it is because of Google’s overwhelming market share they could provide a lower-quality service without any repercussions, hence proving it’s violating competition laws.

Of course, Google says its complying with all laws and is focused on “trying to provide the best result for our users.” But it has faced anti-competition charges in Europe for years. We’ll wait and see if this goes anywhere here in the U.S.

5) Q2 Search Numbers Are Out

They show a 22% year over year increase in paid search ads and a 71% increase in mobile search ads. As I blogged about last week, mobile search has exploded in the past year, but not at the expense of desktop search. Desktop searches have increased as well though at a smaller rate. The numbers show Google still owns about 75% of the paid search ads market while Bing owns about 25%.

The bottom line search is continuing to grow but mobile search is particularly hot. So, search engine optimization and paid search ads are both continue to be good and growing investment.

Finally,Yahoo is committed to pay Google on the off chance that it utilizes its editorial ("algorithmic") search results for Web listings or images. This is prone to guarantee that Yahoo doesn't take Google's listings however demonstrates Yahoo's own ads against them.In such a case,Google would be earning nothing yet giving a service.
